Get the thumbnail of any YouTube video
Every YouTube video has a cover image – the thumbnail you see in search results and on the home page. Y4DL’s thumbnail downloader finds every size YouTube keeps for a video and lets you save the one you need as a JPG file. Paste the video link above, open the Thumbnail tab and press Download.
It works for regular videos, Shorts and live streams, on any phone, tablet or computer. There is nothing to install and no limit on how many thumbnails you save.
Available thumbnail sizes
| Size | Resolution | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| HD (maxres) | 1280 × 720 | Presentations, blog headers, wallpapers, design work |
| SD | 640 × 480 | Websites and documents |
| HQ | 480 × 360 | Social posts and previews |
| MQ | 320 × 180 | Small previews and lists |
The HD version exists only when the uploader published the video in HD or uploaded a custom thumbnail, so some older or low-resolution videos only offer SD and smaller. The tool lists just the sizes that really exist for each video. SD and HQ images are 4:3 and may include black bars at the top and bottom – choose HD or MQ for a clean 16:9 picture.
How to download a YouTube thumbnail
- Copy the video link from the YouTube app (Share → Copy link) or from your browser’s address bar.
- Paste it above and press Start.
- Press Download next to the size you want. The image is saved to your Downloads folder, named after the video.
What people use thumbnails for
- Creators – back up your own thumbnails, or compare designs before a redesign.
- Bloggers and teachers – add a preview image when you link to or embed a video.
- Designers and marketers – collect references and study what makes thumbnails in your niche stand out.
Use thumbnails fairly
A thumbnail is part of the creator’s work and is usually protected by copyright. Use downloaded images for personal reference, for linking to the original video, or with the creator’s permission – don’t pass someone else’s thumbnail off as your own.
